Slippery Business - being true to your brand

WD-40 haven't changed their product packaging or logo since its inception in the 1950s - a simple, utility blue and yellow can with a red cap and the letters WD-40 in a large capital letter font.

The man who could sell chocolate but not himself

I've just been to a meeting with a potential customer (or probable purchaser as I like to think of them). I travelled by train because it's Friday and the 'probable purchaser' is based in a notoriously busy location for traffic. And, come to think of it, I really enjoy train travel - I get lots of opportunity to think and work on things like Blogs.

On my way back, I popped into a newsagent in the station to look at magazines and I was blown away by the shop assistant.

What you can tell from somebody's notepad

If you work in an office, you probably carry a note pad around with you.

Some people take a laptop to meetings and type as they talk, I'll address them in another blog some time - they're worthy of some special comment. But, if you're still in the old fashioned days like the rest of us, read on....

I have been doing some work recently in a very big organisation - one of the worlds top 10 organisations. While I've been there, I've been interacting with a couple of people who are at different places on the notepad spectrum. And they both project very different images.

Uncle Bob Syndrome - how to get customers to value your expertise

I was with my friend and ex-colleague Mike Kelly this week. We met for breakfast in Manchester to chat over our business plans and generally catch up. Mike is one of the rare breed of people who, like me, have managed to make the transition from full on corporate careers to a healthy mix of work that provides variety, interest and flexibility rather than just money and "career prospects".

A quick Customer Service training session from VW

On Monday, I spent the day with my good friend Simon Mannion who runs AIM Web Design. Although we had originally planned a business meeting, things changed and we ended up doing a full day of rugby coaching with 50 children at my son’s school. It’s national sports week and with fantastic weather, it was a good chance for us both to catch up casually in the sunshine whilst giving a load of 8-10 year olds a good time.

I'm not Phelps

I was lucky enough to attend a dinner as the guest of Warrington and Cheshire Sports Partnership last night. The compere for the night was the Olympic swimmer Stephen Parry and his introduction made me think about the different ways you can make an impact.
